-Strong growth of the global car fleets , especially thanks to the economic development of emerging countries. Scarcity of fossil fuels or , the near end of oil at affordable prices As a result of these, the electric-powered vehicle stands today as the alternative for urban transportation for the future sustainability of the mobility standards of our society. The advantages of electric vehicles are : Clean energy usage, which reduces very significantly, or completely, the emissions of gaseous polluting particles.
-Electric propulsion is more efficient than energy from fossil fuels. Goes from the storage to the wheel without losing as much energy as a fossil fuel does in all the process. Electric cars incorporate renewable energy in the full cycle of the transport. Electric cars have great potential for creating new technological applications, such as use as integrated energy storage on the power grid. Rechargeable batteries recycle well. Almost 100 percent of these batteries can be recycled, which keeps old batteries from becoming a disposal problem.
On the other hand, it should be valued very positively the important opportunities of research and industrial development that means for Spain the implementation of electric mobility (manufacturing, charging infrastructure , batteries) and the variety of business models that are emerging in relation to the electrical vehicle; mobility services, applications for smart management and efficient use of vehicles. Currently there exist 3 types of plug-in vehicle technologies in the Spanish market :
¢ Pure electric (BEV battery electric vehicle ) Vehicle powered entirely by an electric motor powered by batteries that are recharged through a power outlet connected to the electric grid. It incorporates regenerative braking system , based on an inertial battery that recovers the energy released in the braking , which contributes to the charging of the batteries and increases the energy efficiency of the vehicle. The level of emissions of this vehicle is zero. ¢ Extended-range Electric ( E-REV )
Plug-in Electric vehicle that also incorporates a deposit of fuel to power the electric motor when the load of battery has been consumed. The propulsion is exclusively electric but the recharging of the electric motor ,thanks to auxiliary combustion system ,allows the vehicle to extend the electric charge range to levels similar to the heat conventional vehicles but with a much lower level of emissions . It incorporates regenerative braking to recharge the electric batteries .
¢ Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV ) Vehicle that combines electric propulsion energy obtained from the grid, until a certain degree of autonomy , with the thermal conventional engine propulsion when the electric batteries are discharged. The electric engine autonomy is higher than in conventional hybrid (not plugged-in) ,which significantly reduces the overall level of emissions. It also incorporates regenerative braking system Evolution of the Market.
Although car registration figures are still irrelevant compared to the overall market volume it should be highlighted that in recent years there has been a true start for the electric motor vehicle, initiating a market with great expectations of growth in our country. Figures for all types of Electric Vehicles registrations From IEA (Instituto de Automocion) The pure electric battery technology is the more present in the current market , although in recent years there are entering electric alternatives combined with combustion engines, especially plug-in hybrid vehicle and to a lesser extent the extended-range electric .
The data about the last 3 years , coincides with the period of the Integral Strategy to Promote Electric Vehicles in Spain ( Estrategia Integral para el Impulso del Vehiculo Electrico en Espana) This strategy has marked several important milestones in the development of the electric power system in our country : ¢ The electric vehicle starts to establish itself as a viable option urban mobility , in view of records motorbikes and quads , each of which now exceeds 1,200 units registered in 2012.
¢ Furthermore, the appearance of first electric cars in our market is fundamental to popularize concept of the electric motor between the mass audience , which is the first essential step for its success and development in the next years . It is evident that the drastic fall of the auto market generally caused by the economic crisis has played against the development of electric vehicle market Spain, together with a phenomenon of shift in supply by the manufacturers and the slow evolution of other factors favoring the demand for VE.
Therefore, it should be recognized that market figures are far away from the objectives set by the Strategy to Promote the VE. However, the strong commitment to the car industry for sustainable mobility energy efficiency, combined with the stimulus determined Spanish Administration is making substantial progress towards the implementation of the electric motor. The success is starting to become touchable. In the last 3 years there have been introduced to the market a significant number of plug-in vehicle models, and most importantly, the EV has been showed to the Spanish society as a real and viable alternative of mobility.
In addition, the firm commitment of the Spanish industry in R & D related to VE places our country in a very advantageous position to manufacture electric vehicles. Purely Electric Cars These are the figures of the Electric Cars registered in the last four years. What is relevant about the Spanish market for electric cars is the relatively important number of brands of which it is currently made, which shows the great interest of manufacturers for the electric motor and its firm commitment to the development of this market.
We can see from the type of micro-city car to luxury sports through midrange compacts, sedans and minivans. According to the Institute of Automotive Studies (IEA), the Nissan Leaf has managed to position itself as the best-selling electric car in Spain during 2012, with 154 units, followed by the Renault Fluence ZE with 77 con73 the Peugeot iOn, the Citroen C-Zero to 58, the Mitsubishi i-Miev to 31, the Think City with 30 ¦ During the year 2013 is expected to join the market new electric models like the revamped Nissan Leaf, the Tesla Model S, the BMW i3 and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe Electric.
In 2014 Volkswagen will the e-up! , the first electric car of the brand. EV Buyers Using the figures we have and although the number of registered cars is not too high we can reach some conclusion about the behaviour of the market We can speak a particular buyer market where there is a little number of pioneers. -The companies are the most active in the adquisition of Evs. One of the key factors for the success of the electric motor is the availability of flexible financing ways for the acquisition and use of VE.
The leasing companies can play an important role in this regard, hence its strong presence in the use of EV, reaching registration between 30-40% (compared to 12% for the total market for passenger cars). -The rest of the current market electric cars is shared between companies with large fleets of cars (12-13%), municipalities and other public organisms, who usually bet for the VE due to its impact as an icon of modernity and environmental commitment. With regards to the particular buyers market and according to GE (General Electric Company) Reports made in the USA ,the potential buyers of electric cars can be divided into three main categories.
The categories are based on the type of motives of people to buy an electric car. The three segments are (1) environmental conscious people who support sustainability, (2) technology and car driven people who are interested in cutting edge innovation and (3) frugal travellers whose main goal is to (permanently) reduce their travel costs.
